Unequal Treatment Revisited
Sept. 6
The third and final in a series, this workshop will discuss racial and ethnic health care disparities in the U.S. Speakers will examine federal efforts to reduce inequities in health care currently underway, and discussion will inform the work of an ongoing National Academies study.
Developing an Agenda for Population Aging and Social Research in Low- and Middle-Income Countries
Sept. 7 and 8
During this workshop, experts will identify the most promising directions for behavioral and social research on aging and Alzheimer’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease-related dementias in low- and middle-income countries, with an emphasis on inequality, environmental exposures, and family changes.
Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Wildland Fires
Sept. 13-15
This workshop will identify opportunities to improve measurements and model projections of greenhouse gas emissions from wildland fires, consider how changes in emissions from these fires could affect our ability to achieve net-zero targets, and discuss management practices for current and future action plans.
Aging in Place with Dementia
Sept. 13-15
At this workshop, discussions will identify what future research is needed to help people living with dementia age in place in the U.S., with an emphasis on community- and neighborhood-level factors.
Environmental Justice Considerations and Impact of Products and Services of Indoor Chemistry
Sept. 19 and 20
Experts in this workshop will identify opportunities and mechanisms to include environmental justice considerations in future funding priorities and research projects in the field of indoor chemistry.
Enhancing Wheelchair Accessibility on Commercial Service Aircraft
Sept. 25
Barriers to airline travel and the ability of people that use mobility devices on commercial service aircraft has sparked national dialogue around considerations for passenger dignity, safety issues, and implications for airlines. This webinar will feature disability advocates, industry leaders, and officials from the U.S. Department of Transportation.
Healthy Longevity Global Innovator Summit
Sept. 26 and 27
The National Academy of Medicine will host the third annual virtual Healthy Longevity Global Innovator Summit, which aims to convene, connect, and inspire innovation in the field of healthy longevity. Participants will hear from academics, policy experts, industry leaders, entrepreneurs, and others and learn about innovative projects from current and past Healthy Longevity Catalyst and Accelerator Awardees. Sessions will focus on topics such as health equity and artificial intelligence.
End of the Federal COVID-19 Emergency Orders: Update on Medicaid Unwinding
Sept. 27
Federal COVID-19 emergency declarations allowed Medicaid recipients to be continuously enrolled throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. When emergency orders ended in March 2023, states were allowed to end Medicaid benefits for many. This webinar will discuss the current state of Medicaid enrollment and what it means for states, practitioners, and patients.
Reports Scheduled for Release in September
Release dates for the following consensus reports and proceedings from the National Academies depend on successful completion of the review process and publishing schedules. Reporters who would like to be notified when a report is due for release should contact the Office of News and Public Information (e-mail news@nas.edu) and ask to be placed on a contact list.
Reducing Intergenerational Poverty
Identifies policies and programs with the potential to reduce long-term, intergenerational poverty. The report will assess the implications of racial/ethnic disparities and make recommendations to guide future federal investments in long-term measures to reduce intergenerational poverty.
The Pediatric Subspecialty Workforce and Its Impact on Child Health and Well-Being
Examines workforce trends among pediatric subspecialists — physicians who complete pediatric residency and receive additional training in a specific area — and the impact of these trends on children’s health, recommending strategies and actions to ensure an adequate pediatric subspecialty workforce.
Test and Evaluation Challenges for Artificial Intelligence-Enabled Systems for the Department of the Air Force
Reviews developments in artificial intelligence and their implications for the U.S. Air and Space Forces and explores what is needed to safely and responsibly test and integrate new technologies.
Thriving in Space — Ensuring the Future of Biological and Physical Sciences Research: A Decadal Survey for 2023-2032
Reviews the state of knowledge in current and emerging areas of space-related biological and physical sciences research, considers what will be needed to meet space exploration mission requirements and advance related science, and makes strategic recommendations for the next decade.
