The workshop summary Exploring Challenges, Progress, and New Models for Engaging the Public in the Clinical Research Enterprise examines the status of current approaches for involving the public and identifies new priorities for public engagement.

Dr. Elias Zerhouni, NIH director, noted at the workshop that the clinical research enterprise is in crisis and there is need for enhanced trust, bi-directional communication, and education of participants and researchers. The workshop summary identifies promising approaches in participant centered research, public involvement in research oversight, and steps to improve translation and dissemination of clinical research.
