    The built environment—the physical world made up of the homes, buildings, streets, and infrastructure within which we all live, work, and play—underwent changes during the 20th and 21st centuries. These changes contributed to a sharp decline in physical activity and affected access to healthy foods, which have added to the weight gain observed among Americans in recent decades. As such, policies and practices that affect the built environment could affect obesity rates in the United States and improve the health of Americans.
  • Harmonization of Approaches to Nutrient Reference Values ... Released: June 11, 2018
    Establishing reference values for nutrient intakes of populations is essential to make recommendations for appropriate, safe dietary intakes and to design nutritional interventions, such as nutrient fortification of foods. Across high-income countries, there is now greater consistency in the methodological approach used to derive the fundamental values needed for establishing nutrient intake recommendations. Yet across other national and international bodies, particularly in the low- and middle-income countries, considerable inconsistency remains.

  • Establishing Effective Patient Navigation Programs in ... Released: May 24, 2018
    Delivering high-quality cancer care to all patients presents numerous challenges, including difficulties with ensuring patients have access to well-coordinated care across the cancer continuum. Patient navigation programs are designed to promote access to timely cancer diagnosis and care by addressing barriers to cancer care, such as challenges with health literacy, language barriers affecting comprehension of diagnosis and treatment, lack of transportation, or insufficient insurance coverage. Patient navigation programs were originally designed—and are still primarily directed at—improving cancer care among vulnerable patients.

Within this context, the Health and Medicine Division of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and the W. Montague Cobb Institute jointly convened a 2-day workshop on November 20-21, 2017, in Washington, D.C.

    Those facing serious illness have a range of interconnected medical and non-medical needs, and the way their care is financed has a large impact on the care they receive. Medicare is the predominant payer, but both Medicaid and private payers also play significant roles in financing care for serious illness. In an effort to address the complex needs of people with serious illness, public and private health care payers are testing innovative financing strategies and alternative payment models.

To help meet these needs, many programs and services to enhance health and functioning of children with disabilities have been developed.
  • Improving Health Research on Small Populations ... Released: May 04, 2018
    The increasing diversity of population of the United States presents many challenges to conducting health research that is representative and informative. Dispersion and accessibility issues can increase logistical costs; populations for which it is difficult to obtain adequate sample size are also likely to be expensive to study. Hence, even if it is technically feasible to study a small population, it may not be easy to obtain the funding to do so. In order to address the issues associated with improving health research of small populations, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine convened a workshop in January 2018. Participants considered ways of addressing the challenges of conducting epidemiological studies or intervention research with small population groups, including alternative study designs, innovative methodologies for data collection, and innovative statistical techniques for analysis.

    The Food and Nutrition Board, in partnership with the Department of Nutrition for Health and Development of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Nutrition Division of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) organized a workshop to explore questions about the uses of nutrient intake recommendations, the frameworks used for their development, the status of nutrient intake recommendations globally, and experiences and expertise in methodological approaches.
