  • Report Release - Preparing for the Future of HIV/AIDS in Africa: A Shared Responsibility November 29, 2010
HIV/AIDS is a catastrophe globally, but nowhere more so than in sub-Saharan Africa, which in 2009 accounted for 68 percent of cases worldwide and 70 percent of new infections. As discussed at its release on November 29, 2010, the IOM report Preparing for the Future of HIV/AIDS in Africa: A Shared Responsibility finds the number of people infected with HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa is projected to far outstrip available resources for treatment by 2020. This means African nations will need to make difficult choices about how to allocate inadequate supplies of lifesaving antiretroviral therapy. The report also says the US government should emphasize a new contract approach that incentivizes shared responsibility with African nations.
