    The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will host a two-day public workshop on August 22-23, 2018 at the National Academies Building (Fred Kavli Auditorium) called Exploring Medical and Public Health Preparedness for a Nuclear Incident. Through this workshop, participants from government, NGO and private sector organizations will explore current assumptions behind and the status of medical and public health preparedness for a nuclear incident, examine potential changes in assumptions and approach, and discuss challenges and opportunities for capacity building in the current threat environment.

    The Roundtable on Genomics and Precision Health hosted a public workshop on June 27, 2018 to explore disparities in access to genetic/genomic services that exist across different segments of the population (e.g., in medically underserved areas and populations, across different racial/ethnic groups, and socioeconomic levels). The workshop discussed model programs of care for diverse patient populations, with a focus on examining current challenges, approaches, and best practices for alleviating disparities in access, which may include the geographic distribution of providers and services and the potential role of telemedicine. Workshop discussions focused on insurance coverage for genetic/genomic services, along with the financial costs for patients of genetic testing and downstream care.
