Public Workshop on the intersection of biofuels, climate change, and human health: Roundtable on Environmental Health Sciences, Research, and Medicine.

The Global Environmental Health and Sustainable Development Innovation Collaborative will host a 3-part webinar series, under the coordination of the Roundtable on Environmental Health Sciences, Research, and Medicine. The webinars will take place from 11:00 am - 12:30 pm Eastern Time on October 18, November 15, and December 20, 2012.

This workshop will bring together members of the ecology, ecosystem services, and health communities to gain a better understanding of the connections between coastal waterways and ocean processes and public health risks and benefits. While ecosystem health is defined by some as the structural and function integrity of the biophysical system, this workshop will uses a broader definition that includes the symbiotic relationship among coastal waterways and oceans, other plants and organisms, and people. Thus a healthy coastal waterway and ocean delivers benefits to society and future generations.

The webinars will take place from 11:00 am - 12:30 pm Eastern Time on the Third Thursday of October, November, and December 2012.

Open Meeting

This workshop will focus on shale gas extraction to explore the health impacts of emerging energy technologies and the use of health impact assessments to assess and identify ways to mitigate potential health impacts.

The focus of this meeting is to discuss the intersection of environmental health and economics. This is a follow-up to the meeting in March and will continue our discussion in light of the fact that next year is the Rio+20 meeting. The background materials include selected papers on environmental health economics. This will be the first meeting that Frank Loy, the new chair, will preside over the Roundtable.

The EHS Roundtable discussed the role of public health in sustainable development and the Rio +20 Conference.

The EHS Roundtable will continue discussing the issue of environmental justice. This subject was first discussed by the roundtable in November 2010.
