Victor J. Dzau, M.D., to Be Next Institute of Medicine President

Victor J. Dzau, M.D., has been named to be the next president of the Institute of Medicine, the National Academy of Sciences announced today. Currently chancellor for health affairs at Duke University, president and CEO for Duke University Health System, and James B. Duke Professor of Medicine, Dzau will succeed Harvey V. Fineberg, who has served as IOM’s president for 12 years. Dzau's six-year term as president will begin July 1, 2014.

Health and Incarceration - A Workshop Summary

The National Research Council and the IOM held a workshop to discuss the challenges and opportunities for improving health and health care of incarcerated populations. Workshop participants reviewed what is known about the health of incarcerated individuals, the health care they receive, and the effects of incarceration on public health.

Institute of Medicine Names Four Anniversary Fellows for 2013

The Institute of Medicine has selected four outstanding health professionals for the class of 2013 IOM Anniversary Fellows. They were selected from excellent groups of nominees based on their professional qualifications, reputations as scholars, professional accomplishments, and relevance of current field expertise to the work of the IOM. Beginning in October, the fellows will work with eminent researchers, policy experts, and clinicians from across the country to collaborate on initiatives convened by the IOM to provide nonpartisan, evidence-based guidance to national, state, and local policymakers, academic leaders, health care administrators, and the public.
