Walmart Commits to Improve the Health of Its Food Products

Walmart announced on January 20, 2011, that it would work to provide healthier food choices and make those foods more affordable to consumers. Walmart will reformulate many packaged foods to reduce sodium and added sugars, and eliminate trans fats by 2015. The company references the IOM in its rationale for sodium and trans fat reduction.

International Partnership Helps Reduce Cost of Antimalarial Drugs

On the basis of the central recommendation from the 2004 IOM report Saving Lives, Buying Time: The Economics of Antimalarial Drugs, an international partnership called Affordable Medicines Facility for Malaria was established in April 2009 to heavily subsidize the antimalarial drug market.

The Wellness Community to Establish Cancer Survivorship Research and Training Institute

During a meeting in October 2008, The Wellness Community (TWC), a nonprofit organization providing cancer support, announced it would establish a Cancer Survivorship Research & Training Institute in Philadelphia. In explaining the need for this type of Institute, TWC referenced the Institute of Medicine’s November 2007 report Cancer Care for the Whole Patient: Meeting Psychosocial Health Needs.
