Childhood Obesity Prevention From Birth Through Preschool: IOM Report Releases June 23

Recommendations for preventing childhood obesity have mainly focused on children from kindergarten ages through young adulthood. However, evidence points to early childhood as a critical period for assessing the beginnings of obesity and implementing preventive measures. Obesity Prevention Policies for Young Children, a new report from the IOM, recommends evidence-based strategies and policies to promote healthy weights in children from birth to age 5.

LGBT Health Research Gaps and Needs: IOM Report Release March 31
Released: 3/28/2011

Recent findings on the differences in heart disease among women and men and among blacks and whites show that characteristics such as gender and ethnicity matter when it comes to health research. A new report from the IOM, recommends steps to ensure that clinical researchers identify and address the needs of LGBT populations. The report will be released at an 11:00 a.m. public briefing on Thursday, March 31.

Calcium and Vitamin D – Updated Dietary Reference Intakes From IOM
Released: 11/19/2010

Vitamin D and calcium have been the focus of much research since the IOM set nutritional reference values for them in 1997. Known as Dietary Reference Intakes, the values for these and other nutrients serve as a guide for good nutrition and provide the scientific basis for the development of food guidelines in both the United States and Canada. Updated DRIs for these two nutrients are presented in a new IOM report, Dietary Reference Intakes for Calcium and Vitamin D, which will be released on Tuesday, November 30.
