U.S. Health Ranking Among High-Income Countries -- Telephone News Briefing Jan. 9
Released: 1/7/2013

A new report from the National Research Council and Institute of Medicine compares the health of the American population with that of 16 high-income countries that include Australia, Canada, Japan, and many western European countries. The report explores health outcomes beyond mortality rates and is the first to look comprehensively at multiple diseases, injuries, and health-related behaviors across the entire life span.

Concussions Among Youth Athletes: Institute of Medicine and National Research Council Meeting on Jan. 7

CIRM Review by Institute of Medicine to Release Dec. 6

The California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) asked the Institute of Medicine to conduct an independent review of CIRM's programs and operations and recommend steps to improve its performance. The results of this review appear in a new IOM report, The California Institute for Regenerative Medicine: Science, Governance, and the Pursuit of Cures. Members of the authoring committee will discuss their findings and recommendations in a one-hour telephone press briefing beginning at 1:30 p.m. EST (10:30 a.m. PST) Thursday, Dec. 6.

Improving Accuracy of Medicare Payment Geographic Adjustments – IOM Report Releases July 17
Released: 7/13/2012

Adjustments to Medicare payments based on geography are intended to account for regional variations in wages, rents, and other costs incurred by hospitals and individual health care practitioners. In a first phase report, the Institute of Medicine recommended changes to the data sources and methods used to calculate these payment adjustments to achieve greater accuracy. Geographic Adjustment in Medicare Payment, Phase II: Implications for Access, Quality, and Efficiency, the second report from the study, assesses the potential effects of these proposed changes.

Initial Assessment of DOD, VA PTSD Treatment Services – IOM Report Releases July 13
Released: 7/12/2012

In response to growing national concern about the rates of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among military personnel and veterans, Congress passed legislation calling on the Institute of Medicine to study the availability and effectiveness of PTSD treatments, current and projected costs of these treatments, and what additional research is needed to improve sufferers’ outcomes.
