Health care spending is one of the fastest growing contributors to government debt. According to the Congressional Budget Office, federal spending on health care will double in the next 10 years, consuming 27 percent of the budget by 2020. A new workshop summary from the Institute of Medicine presents expert insights from physicians, nurses, patients, hospital administrators, health economists, employers, insurers, and others on the size and nature of wasted resources in the health care system and how to improve health care value.

Social Security Criteria for HIV-Related Disability Beneifts are Outdated; IOM Report Recommends New Criteria to Make Claim Reviews More Accurate and Fair

The U.S. Social Security Administration's HIV Infection Listings — the criteria it uses when determining whether people with HIV are disabled by their infection and eligible for benefits — do not reflect the evolution of HIV/AIDS from a fatal disease to a chronic condition, says a new report from the Institute of Medicine. The report recommends new criteria to update the HIV Infection Listings and make the claims review process more accurate and fair.

Thomas E. Starzl, pioneer of organ transplantation science, receives Institute of Medicine's 2009 Lienhard Award

The Institute of Medicine presented the 2009 Gustav O. Lienhard Award to Thomas E. Starzl, Distinguished Service Professor of Surgery and director emeritus of the Thomas E. Starzl Transplantation Institute, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. The award honors Starzl -- regarded as the "father of modern organ transplantation" -- for his foundational role in pioneering and advancing transplantation science.
