NIH Creates Office of Emergency Care Research

Sparked by the release of three 2006 IOM reports – Emergency Care for Children: Growing Pains, Hospital-Based Emergency Care: At the Breaking Point, and Emergency Medical Services At the Crossroads – the NIH began an effort to examine its research activities in emergency medicine and to hear from investigators and stakeholders in the field. The IOM reports found the emergency medical system to be overburdened, underfunded, and highly fragmented. The NIH effort led to the creation in 2012 of the Office of Emergency Care Research.

The Wellness Community to Establish Cancer Survivorship Research and Training Institute

During a meeting in October 2008, The Wellness Community (TWC), a nonprofit organization providing cancer support, announced it would establish a Cancer Survivorship Research & Training Institute in Philadelphia. In explaining the need for this type of Institute, TWC referenced the Institute of Medicine’s November 2007 report Cancer Care for the Whole Patient: Meeting Psychosocial Health Needs.

FDA Acts on Drug Safety Recommendation in IOM Report

On June 30, 2008, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) shifted authority on drug safety regulatory issues from the Office of New Drugs (OND) to a shared responsibility between OND and the Office of Surveillance and Epidemiology (OSE) as recommended in the IOM report The Future of Drug Safety: Promoting and Protecting the Health of the Public.

Federal Nursing Home Reform Act Creates National Standards for Nursing Homes

The recommendations from the 1986 IOM report Improving the Quality of Care in Nursing Homes were translated into the Federal Nursing Home Reform Act, for the first time creating national standards of care and rights for people living in nursing homes.
