New IOM Report Highlights PEPFAR's Successes, Calls on Initiative to Intensify Efforts to Enhance Partner Countries' Management of Programs and to Improve Prevention

The President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) has saved and improved millions of lives worldwide and offered proof that HIV/AIDS services can be effectively delivered on a large scale even in countries with high rates of disease and resource constraints, says a new congressionally mandated evaluation conducted by the Institute of Medicine.

IOM Launches New Forum on Global Violence Prevention; Holds First Workshop January 27-28
Released: 1/19/2011

Violence claimed more than 1.5 million lives worldwide in 2000, according to the World Health Organization, and more than 90 percent of these deaths occurred in low- and middle-income countries. Given the profound negative impacts of violence on the health and well-being of people and communities, particularly in less industrialized countries, the IOM has established a new Forum on Global Violence Prevention to promote research on this issue and encourage more effective prevention. The forum will begin its work with a workshop January 27 and 28, which will focus on violence against women and children.

Number of HIV/AIDS Cases in Sub-Saharan Africa Expected to Greatly Outpace Treatment Resources by 2020; Urgent Need to Ramp Up Prevention

The number of people infected with HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa is projected to far outstrip available resources for treatment by the end of the decade, forcing African nations to make difficult choices about how to allocate inadequate supplies of lifesaving antiretroviral therapy (ART), says a new IOM report.

African Science Academies Gather in Ghana

The fifth annual conference of the African Science Academy Development Initiative is under way in Accra, Ghana. The three-day event will focus on how expert advice from science academies and others can guide policies aimed at reducing maternal, newborn, and child mortality in sub-Saharan Africa. The opening ceremony began with video messages by science and policy leaders from around the world, congratulating the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences on its 50th anniversary, and emphasizing the importance of evidence-based advice in the policymaking process.
