The IOM announced the names of 65 new members and five foreign associates on October 17 in conjunction with its 41st annual meeting. Violence claimed more than 1.5 million lives worldwide in 2000, according to the World Health Organization, and more than 90 percent of these deaths occurred in low- and middle-income countries. Given the profound negative impacts of violence on the health and well-being of people and communities, particularly in less industrialized countries, the IOM has established a new Forum on Global Violence Prevention to promote research on this issue and encourage more effective prevention. The forum will begin its work with a workshop January 27 and 28, which will focus on violence against women and children.
