Two IOM Members awarded Nobel Prizes in Medicine

Two Institute of Medicine (IOM) members, Bruce Beutler and Ralph Steinman, were awarded 2011 Nobel Prizes in Psychology or Medicine. Beutler, IOM class of 2008, was awarded jointly with Jules Hoffman “for their discoveries concerning the activation of innate immunity.” Steinman, IOM class of 2002, was recognized “for his discovery of the dendritic cell and its role in adaptive immunity.” The Nobel Assembly noted the prize winners’ “work has opened up new avenues for the development of prevention and therapy against infections, cancer, and inflammatory diseases.” Only after the announcement on October 3 did the Nobel Foundation discover that Steinman had died on September 30. Nobel Prizes cannot be awarded posthumously, but the Foundation determined that Steinman would remain a recipient.
