Medicare Should Employ New Data Sources, Methods To Ensure Accuracy Of Geographic Adjustments To Payments
Released: 6/1/2011

Geographic adjustments to Medicare payments are intended to accurately and equitably cover regional variations in wages, rents, and other costs incurred by hospitals and individual health care practitioners, but almost 40 percent of hospitals have been granted exceptions to how their adjustments are calculated, finds a new report from the IOM.

Medicare Payment Adjustments – Focus of New IOM Report Releasing June 1

Geographic Adjustment in Medicare Payments, a new report from the Institute of Medicine, assesses the methodology and data sources used to calculate payment adjustments and recommends ways to improve their accuracy. The report is the first of three examining Medicare’s geographic adjustment factors and will be released June 1.

The number of people infected with HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa is projected to far outstrip available resources for treatment by the end of the decade, forcing African nations to make difficult choices about how to allocate inadequate supplies of lifesaving antiretroviral therapy (ART), says a new IOM report.

The Eldercare Workforce Alliance Addresses Shortages in Elder Care

The Eldercare Workforce Alliance, a coalition of 25 leading organizations representing older adults and the eldercare workforce, held its founding meeting during the first week of February 2009. The Alliance was formed in direct response to a report released in the spring of 2008 by the Institute of Medicine, Retooling for an Aging America: Building the Health Care Workforce, which concluded that America's eldercare workforce is dangerously understaffed and unprepared to care for the rapidly growing number of older adults in the U.S.

Congress Introduces Legislation to Implement IOM Recommendations
Released: 2/2/2009

Senators Herb Kohl (D-WI), Blanche Lincoln (D-AR), and Bob Casey (D-PA), along with lead sponsor Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), introduced the first bill named for an IOM report on January 14, 2009. The “Retooling the Health Care Workforce for an Aging America Act” (H.R. 468) incorporates recommendations from the IOM report Retooling for an Aging America: Building the Health Care Workforce.

The Wellness Community to Establish Cancer Survivorship Research and Training Institute

During a meeting in October 2008, The Wellness Community (TWC), a nonprofit organization providing cancer support, announced it would establish a Cancer Survivorship Research & Training Institute in Philadelphia. In explaining the need for this type of Institute, TWC referenced the Institute of Medicine’s November 2007 report Cancer Care for the Whole Patient: Meeting Psychosocial Health Needs.
