When: January 8, 2016 (1:00 PM Eastern)

Topic Military and Veterans Health
Activity: Shipboard Hazard and Defense II (SHAD II)
Boards: Medical Follow-Up Agency, Board on the Health of Select Populations

In response to the Caregivers and Veterans Omnibus Health Services Act of 2010 and an ensuing request from the Department of Veterans Affairs, the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine’s Institute of Medicine assembled a committee of experts to conduct an epidemiological study to evaluate the health status of the veterans of Project SHAD (Shipboard Hazard and Defense). Building on a previous IOM analysis of the health of SHAD veterans, this study used data on deaths and illness to compare the health experience of SHAD veterans with that of a comparison population of veterans who served at a similar time in similar units.

The report presenting the results of the study is planned for public release on Friday, January 8, 2016, at 11 a.m.  The Academies will offer an WebEx briefing for veterans and others interested on January 8, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. (ET) /10:00 a.m. (PT) to present the findings of the report.

Registration will be limited, but the slides and audio recording from the briefing will be posted to this study webpage for viewing.
