Opportunities for Progress at the Interface of Health and Education: A Workshop

When: June 5, 2014 (8:00 AM Eastern)

Topics Education, Public Health
Activity: Roundtable on Population Health Improvement
Board: Board on Population Health and Public Health Practice

The Roundtable on Population Health Improvement held a public workshop to (1) showcase a conversation about how what we know about the relationship between education and health can inform our nation’s policies and investments; and (2) showcase examples and facilitate a dialogue about how the health and education sectors can work together to achieve co-benefits (improvements in educational attainment and in health status). The keynote presentations—one by Steve Woolf (professor at Virginia Commonwealth University and chair of the NRC/IOM committee that authored U.S. Health in International Perspective: Shorter Lives, Poorer Health) and the other by Peter Orszag (vice chairman at CitiGroup, Inc. and former director of the Office of Management and Budget, and of the Congressional Budget Office)—addressed the first aim. The panel presentations occurring at other points during the day helped to address the second aim.
