The Potential Role of Sleep in Obesity Prevention and Management: A Virtual Workshop (Webinar)
Obesity affects 17 percent of children and adolescents and almost 36 percent of adults. Conservative estimates suggest that obesity now accounts for almost 10 percent of the national health care budget. Until the obesity epidemic is reversed, obesity will continue to drive rates of chronic diseases such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer.
A relatively new development in research on the causes, prevention, and treatment of obesity is the increasing evidence and discussion about the potential relationship between sleep and obesity, as well as a strong interest on the part of the public health community in examining the evidence and its potential implications.
The Roundtable will host a new virtual workshop (webinar) that will examine the potential relationship between sleep and obesity. The webinar will feature individual invited speakers and presentations that will explore the current understanding of sleep physiology and sleep disorders, existing experimental and epidemiological evidence about sleep and obesity risk, and the current recommendations for sleep as they relate to the prevention and management of obesity in children and adults.
