Karen McIntyre, M.S., is the director general, Food Directorate, Health Products and Food Branch, Health Canada. She manages a multi-disciplinary team of scientists and regulators to develop standards, policies and regulations to support the safety and nutritional value of the Canadian food supply. Ms. McIntyre works closely with federal, provincial and territorial partners and key stakeholders, international governments and food standard setting organizations. Prior to joining the Food Directorate in March 2015, Ms. McIntyre was the executive director, Operations, Policy and Systems Directorate, Operations Branch at the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. She was accountable for the development of guidance to ensure the effective delivery of inspection programs in food safety, animal and plant health. From 2008-2012, she was the executive director, Agrifood, Meat and Seafood Safety Directorate, Policy and Programs Branch. She also served as the Canadian co-chair of the Canada-EU Joint Management Committee on the Veterinary Agreement. Ms. McIntyre holds a M.S. in microbiology from the University of Guelph.
