Jeffrey J. Zachwieja, Ph.D., is Senior Director for Global R&D Nutrition Sciences at PepsiCo. He is responsible for setting the nutrition research agenda, managing nutrition science support for category innovation and ensuring that activation programs are strategically aligned with business units and delivered against PepsiCo’s Performance with Purpose commitments for nutrition and public health. Dr. Zachwieja held various technical and leadership positions at PepsiCo, working mostly in the Gatorade Sports Science Institute and the Global R&D organization. He then held the role of Senior Vice President for Nutrition Research, Scientific and Regulatory Affairs at the National Dairy Council until returning to PepsiCo in late 2016. Dr. Zachwieja has been awarded seven patents and is an author or co-author on more than 60 peer reviewed scientific publications and reviews. He has given numerous invited presentations in the U.S. and abroad, and is a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine. Dr. Zachwieja earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois and master’s degree from Eastern Illinois University, both in physical education, and he received a doctorate in human bioenergetics from Ball State University. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the Division of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri, where he developed specific research expertise in the use of stable isotopes to study whole body protein turnover, as well as skeletal muscle protein synthesis. He then served as assistant professor and chief of the Exercise and Nutrition Program at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
