Dr. Luiz Augusto Cassanha Galvão, a Brazilian national, received his medical degree at the "Faculdade de Medicina do ABC" in São Paulo, Brazil, in 1977. In 1978 he concluded a two-year residence in public health and in 1989, he received a Master’s Degree in Public Health with specialization in environmental epidemiology, both from the Escola Nacional de Saúde Pública of Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (FIOCRUZ). He has also completed a specialization course in clinical toxicology in the "Universidad de Buenos Aires" in Argentina, and has participated in a Special Training Program on Environmental Health Risk Assessment, and attended a variety of courses in the field of environmental health and toxicology.
Dr. Galvão began his professional career in 1979 at the Instituto de Saúde da Bahia in Brazil, as Coordinator of the IIMCAS Project. In 1981 he became Coordinator of the Bahia Poison Control Center-CIAVE. In 1983 he was appointed Coordinator of the Environmental Health Area of the Institute of Health of São Paulo. In 1985 Dr. Galvão became Vice-coordinator and later, in 1989, Coordinator of the Center for Studies on Workers' Health and Human Ecology (CESTEH) of FIOCRUZ.
Dr. Galvão's professional career includes extensive teaching experience and a vast number of technical publications. He was president of the Brazilian Society of Toxicology and is an active member of several professional associations.Dr. Galvão's career at PAHO started in 1984 as a short-term consultant at the Pan American Center for Human Ecology and Health (ECO) in Mexico, and in 1991, he became a permanent staff member in the position of Environmental Epidemiologist of the Center. In 1994 he was appointed Regional Advisor on Environmental Quality. In July of 2001 he was appointed Coordinator of the Environmental Quality Program, a position which he occupied until February of 2003. In March of 2003, he was appointed Acting Area Manager of the Sustainable Development and Environmental Health Area (SDE), and as of 1 September 2003 he was appointed as Area Manager of SDE.
