Understanding Gulf Ocean Systems Grants 1 (opening February 2018)
Topic: Studies and Observations to Inform Loop Current Campaign

Grants of up to 24 months to support activities that will supply new observations and analyses needed to improve understanding and prediction of the Loop Current System. This solicitation is the first of several funding opportunities for a research campaign outlined in the National Academies Report Understanding and Predicting the Gulf of Mexico Loop Current: Gaps and Recommendations, released in January 2018. This solicitation is focused on the near-term activities identified in the report that can either jumpstart or inform the design of the longer campaign.

Networking & Idea Development Workshop: Thriving Communities Grants 5 (accepting applications)
In July 2018 the GRP will be opening a grant opportunity, Thriving Communities Grants 5, focused on enhancing community resilience and well-being in the Gulf of Mexico region. In advance of this, the GRP is hosting a Networking and Idea Development Workshop to connect potential applicants, encourage collaboration, and help cultivate innovative ideas for applying to the grant opportunity. The three-day, interactive, in-person workshop will be held May 30 through June 1 in Mobile, Alabama. Applications to participate in the workshop will be accepted through 5:00 p.m. EST on March 8, 2018.

Thriving Communities Grants 5 (opening July 2018)
Topic: Enhancing Coastal Community Resilience and Well-being in the Gulf of Mexico Region

Grants of up to 36 months to support efforts in the Gulf of Mexico region that will 1) increase understanding of how community attributes and systems interact and influence a community’s capacity to adapt and thrive, and 2) provide actionable information and strategies that can be used to implement policies and practices that enhance community resilience. Full details for this opportunity are still under development. This opportunity is scheduled to open in July 2018.

A Networking and Idea Development Workshop is being held in advance of this opportunity; applications to participate in the workshop will be accepted through 5:00 p.m. EST on March 8, 2018.

Capacity Building Grants: Education (accepting applications)

Grants Timeline Phase 1
Grants of up to 24 months to support efforts aimed at increasing the scientific and environmental literacy and problem-solving skills of children and youth by providing service-, project-, or problem- based learning opportunities on topics that are relevant to the GRP’s initiatives.

In response to the impacts of Gulf Coast hurricanes Harvey and Irma on scientific research, the Gulf Research Program (GRP) will fund small grants of up to $50,000 to help with repair, replacement, or recovery of equipment, data, and/or other research materials damaged or lost due to the hurricanes and their aftermaths. These awards are intended to help scientists recover from their losses and minimize downtime for their research efforts.
