  • In an interview, Victor Anomah Ngu -- a retired surgeon and the current president of the Cameroon Academy of Sciences -- discussed this week's meeting in Nairobi as well as next steps. Cameroon's academy will host the 2006 ASADI conference in Yaounde.
  • And I quote... Participants at the first annual international conference of the African Science Academy Development Initiative (ASADI), held in Nairobi, Kenya, often spoke passionately about the need to strengthen the ability of Africa's scientific community to inform government policy-making and public discourse with independent, evidence-based advice. This is a sample of quotes from various conference speakers.
  • A comprehensive public-health education strategy was critical to rebuilding public trust and gaining the support of various leaders, said ASADI conference participant Alhaji Umaru Shehu, professor emeritus, community medicine, University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital. He played a key role in shaping and implementing that strategy, which he discussed at the Nairobi event.
